Why we use Mercury in Thermometer?

Mercury is used for several reasons. Firstly it expands at a constant rate over the temperatures we are likely to encounter in everyday life (between -40 and 100 celcius, and even further in each direction). Secondly it does not freeze or boil between these temperatures, such as alcohol would do. The only drawback with mercury is that it is poisonous, but if you don't go round brealing thermometers in your mouth then you should be alright.
